Languages Spoken in Bermuda
23rd May 2012
If you’ve ever wondered about the languages spoken in Bermuda, English is the official language of the country. Wherever you go on the island you will be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t speak English.
People from Bermuda speak with a very unique Mid-Atlantic accent which is very endearing once you get used to it. The well spoken Bermudian accent has all the elegance of the British accent combined with the panache of the North American vernacular.
Of course while being the prominent language of the Island, English is not the only language spoken by a large group. Portuguese is the second most established dialect spoken, mostly by descendants of people who immigrated from the Azores in Portugal. If you do speak Portuguese, you will be able to find people here and there to talk to and chances are that they are of Portuguese decent.
Spanish is spoken in Bermuda by some people who came from South America and Spain. Next to Portuguese, this would be Bermuda’s language number 3. There are other languages spoken such as French and many other European languages but of course these are a very small minority.
Bermuda is one of the top places for international business and therefore it does bring people from all over the world. There are many people who speak foreign languages, so keep your ears open and you may find some of the very rare ones if you’re ever in the neighborhood of Bermuda.
